Travelling in Cambodia in 1996, the legacy of the Khmer Rouge, under Pol Pot’s leadership, was clearly visible. The people on the street were heavily skewed to be younger, over 40 years’ were predominantly women and many amputees. The Cambodian genocide under the Khmer Rouge was one of the most devastating and extreme atrocities in modern history. From 1975 to 1979, it wiped out about 25% of the nation’s total population.
